Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February every year, with the goal of raising awareness about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. Over 300 million people are living with one or more of over 6,000 identified rare diseases around the world – that is about 5% of the worldwide population!  Many rare diseases are genetic and the majority start in childhood.

A disease is generally considered ‘rare’ if it affects fewer than 1 in 2,000 people. The prevalence of LGMD2A/R1 has been estimated to be between 1 and 7 per 100,000 people. The prevalence is variable based on geographic area, with higher rates calculated in the Reunion Island, the Basque region of Spain, and the Amish population of Indiana. LGMD2A/R1 is the most frequent subtype of LGMD in most countries.

For many rare diseases, expertise and information are scarce and diagnosis is challenging. Only 5% of rare diseases have an FDA approved treatment. Coalition to Cure Calpain 3 needs your help in raising awareness and funding research towards a cure!
